FELL Electro-Scan

current trace
The City of Fountain Valley Wastewater Utility was concerned with a section of 21" sewer pipe. The pipe passed under a large flood control box culvert and the "back-up" flow was typical of a blockage but jet cleaning did not alleviate the problem.

The next investigation step would have been television inspection but this required a major bypass operation as the pipe was running 90% full most of the time.

Instead the pipe section was electro-scanned using the a FELL-41 system.  The test was completed within two hours and showed major anomalies where the pipe passed under the culvert.  (See electro-scan trace)  Within a month the pipe section was excavated and showed the pipe had severe joint separation along the segment passing under the culvert.

James Sharp, Maintenance Superintendent, said:
"The City was wondering what to do about this pipe section.  Field observations showed there was some sort of pipe problem but there was not quite enough evidence to justify the high cost of bypass pumping for television inspection.  The quick and low cost electro-scan provided the critical information necessary to make the decision to excavate the pipe. The next evidence to appear of the pipe defects could have been a major road collapse and the repair and clean up cost would have been 100 times greater."
